Spain or Italy? If you’re planning a destination wedding in the Mediterranean, chances are your shortlist has come down to these two — and for good reason. Both offer extraordinary light, food worth flying for, and venues that feel like film sets. As wedding planners based in Barcelona, we’ll be honest about our bias upfront — but we’ve also planned for couples who considered both, and the differences are real and practical. Here is the comparison we wish every couple had before choosing.

The short answer

Choose Italy if your dream is a Tuscan villa aesthetic, you have a larger budget, and the classic romance of Chianti or Lake Como outweighs everything else. Choose Spain — and Barcelona in particular — if you want comparable beauty with 20–30% lower costs, easier international access, a city-plus-coast experience for your guests, and more flexibility on dates and venue exclusivity.

Cost comparison: what couples actually spend

These are indicative all-in ranges for an international couple with around 60–80 guests, based on what we see in the market in 2026 — including venue, catering, planning, photography, flowers and music, excluding travel:

The gap is largest at the top end: Tuscany and Lake Como venues command an international premium that Catalonia simply doesn’t charge yet, despite offering castles, masías and seafront villas of equivalent beauty. As a concrete example, a full luxury castle wedding at Castell de Sant Marçal near Barcelona typically lands around €60,000–75,000 all-in — a comparable Tuscan castle weekend routinely passes €100,000.

Venues: villa romance vs. castle-and-coast variety

Italy’s strength is a deep, world-famous inventory of one style: the Renaissance villa with cypress avenues and vineyard views. If that image is non-negotiable for you, Italy wins — nowhere does it identically.

Spain’s strength is range within a 60-minute radius. From Barcelona you can marry in a medieval castle like Castell Sant Marçal, a modernist seafront estate like Xalet del Nin in Sitges, a rustic Catalan masía among vineyards, or barefoot on a Costa Brava beach — without moving your guests between regions. For couples whose guest list wants a real trip (city, beach, mountains, nightlife), Barcelona is hard to beat: guests fly into one of Europe’s best-connected airports and everything is close.

Guest experience and logistics

This is the quietly decisive factor. Tuscany’s beauty comes with friction: most guests fly into Florence or Pisa, then need rental cars or shuttles to reach rural venues, and accommodation near the villa is often limited and books out a year ahead. Barcelona offers direct long-haul flights from the US and every European hub, an enormous hotel supply at every price point, and venues within an hour of the city — your guests can turn your wedding into a proper holiday without a car.

Weather and season

Both countries share the Mediterranean sweet spots of May–June and September–October. The practical differences: Barcelona’s coastal climate is milder in the shoulder months (outdoor ceremonies are realistic from April through late October), while inland Tuscany runs hotter in July–August and cooler earlier in spring. If you’re eyeing an off-season date to save budget, Catalonia’s winters are gentler — and venues here are noticeably more flexible on off-season pricing.

The legal side: identical logic in both countries

Here Spain and Italy are more alike than different: both make legally binding civil weddings bureaucratic for non-resident foreigners — Spain requires two years’ residency for a civil ceremony, and Italy demands a chain of translated, apostilled documents and consular declarations. In both countries, the overwhelming majority of international couples complete the legal marriage at home and celebrate a symbolic ceremony at their destination. Food and wine

Calling this one is impossible — both are world-class — but they’re different experiences. Italy delivers the familiar crowd-pleasing canon: handmade pasta, Chianti, long family-style tables. Catalonia offers something guests talk about afterwards precisely because fewer of them have had it at a wedding: seafood paella finished over open flame, cava from Penedès twenty minutes from your venue, vermouth hours, calçotadas in season, and a Michelin-dense gastronomic scene (Catalonia has one of the highest concentrations of starred restaurants in Europe) that filters down into wedding catering.

Where each country wins

Italy wins on: the iconic villa-in-the-vineyards aesthetic, name recognition (“we married in Tuscany”), and regions purpose-built for slow, rural romance.

Spain wins on: value at every tier, guest logistics and flight access, venue variety within one region, milder shoulder seasons, date flexibility, and — frankly — the element of surprise. Fewer of your guests will have attended a Catalan castle wedding, and that freshness shows in how they remember it.

Our honest take

If the Tuscan villa is the dream itself, go to Tuscany — no planner should talk you out of your own imagination. But if the dream is a breathtaking Mediterranean wedding your guests will never forget, Spain delivers it with less friction and meaningfully more budget left over for the things that shape the day: food, flowers, music, and a few extra nights of celebration.
